The talks are aimed at a possible revival of energy trade between Russia and Europe within the framework of negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.
Russian and US officials have held talks about the
possibility of US investors participating in the Nord Stream pipelines,
infrastructure that previously transported Russian natural gas to Germany,
according to Reuters.
Among the participants in these talks was US Special Envoy
Jared Kushner, whose involvement is related to efforts to explore opportunities
for economic cooperation between the two countries.
The potential participation of US capital would open the
door for US investors to profit from a possible resumption of Russian natural
gas exports to Europe, provided that political and economic conditions allow
for the restoration of these trade flows.
The talks are taking place within the context of a broader
effort to promote economic agreements that contribute to the negotiations to
end the war between Russia and Ukraine. The Nord Stream pipelines were a key
component of Russia's energy supply to Germany before the conflict. However,
the explosions in September 2022 damaged the infrastructure and significantly
altered the prospects for their operation.
If such an agreement were to materialize, it could have repercussions
for the European energy market and for economic relations between Washington
and Moscow. Nevertheless, the reported talks do not signify a definitive
agreement to invest in the pipelines or resume their operations.
