WASHINGTON—Calley Means, a Trump administration official, stated that transparency in the food industry is essential to ensuring a free market and protecting the health of American consumers.
During his
remarks, Means maintained that the information available about the ingredients
and substances used in food has deteriorated over the past few decades and
assured that President Donald Trump's administration is working to reverse this
situation.
“Transparency
is fundamental to a free market, and food transparency has been severely
compromised in recent decades, something the Trump administration is
addressing,” Means stated.
The official
also expressed concern about children's exposure to chemicals present in food
products and indicated that authorities should ensure greater transparency
regarding the components used in the food production chain.
“We must
ensure that our children's cells are not poisoned by thousands of unknown
chemicals,” he added.
Means linked
this exposure to health problems such as obesity, diabetes, and certain mental
health disorders.
His
statements come amid the debate sparked by the Trump administration regarding
food composition, labeling, and the need to provide consumers with more
information about products on the market.
