U.S. Senator Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican and chairman
of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, released a series of internal
federal government documents that he claims reveal FBI involvement in Peter
Daszak's entry into the United States in 2021, during the height of the
international investigation into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the information released by the senator, the
documents indicate that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), during the
administration of then-President Joe Biden, requested that Customs and Border
Protection (CBP) not search or question Daszak upon his arrival at John F.
Kennedy International Airport in New York from China.
According to Rand Paul, Daszak's trip occurred while he was
part of the World Health Organization (WHO) mission tasked with analyzing the
possible origins of SARS-CoV-2, an investigation that has been surrounded by
questions from various political and scientific sectors since its inception.
Peter Daszak, president of the EcoHealth Alliance, has been
a central figure in the international debate on the origin of the coronavirus
due to his organization's collaboration with the Wuhan Institute of Virology on
research into bat coronaviruses. This relationship has been the subject of
multiple investigations and hearings in the U.S. Congress.
The Republican senator argued that the American documents
warrant greater scrutiny by the Senate, considering that federal authorities
must explain why, allegedly, Daszak was not subjected to an inspection or
questioning process upon his return to the country at a time considered crucial
for clarifying the origin of the pandemic.
The publication of these documents once again places the
transparency of investigations related to the pandemic at the center of the
debate, as well as the role played by various US government agencies during the
first years after the global health emergency.
