President Donald Trump reignited the political debate in the
United States by warning of the consequences of a Democratic victory in the
upcoming November midterm elections. During a message to his supporters, the
president asserted that the country's political and constitutional future would
be at risk if the opposition manages to regain control of Congress.
Trump claimed that the Democrats would push through profound
transformations of American institutions, as they have been doing, including a
possible expansion of the Supreme Court to increase the number of justices and
alter the ideological balance of the highest court. They would also seek to
eliminate parliamentary mechanisms such as the filibuster in the Senate to pass
legislation more easily.
The Republican president further maintained that the
opposition would attempt to politically favor his party through structural
changes, such as the addition of new states traditionally considered
Democratic, as well as more flexible immigration policies that would lead to a
massive increase in people crossing the border, as has already happened.
In one of the most forceful moments of his speech, Trump
asserted that a Democratic takeover would represent a breaking point for the
country. “If they gain control of Congress and eventually the entire
government, the United States would be finished,” he told his supporters,
emphasizing the need to maintain a Republican majority in the midterm
elections.
