President Donald Trump has once again placed himself at the
center of controversy by publicly demanding that the U.S. Supreme Court
permanently eliminate birthright citizenship for children of undocumented
immigrants. In a statement, the Republican asserted that the current
interpretation of the 14th Amendment has been “distorted” for decades and used
to exploit the American system.
Trump recalled that this constitutional provision was
created after the Civil War to recognize the rights of the children of freed
slaves, not to benefit people who enter the country illegally. He provided some
historical context, noting that the original intent of the amendment never
contemplated granting automatic citizenship to children of foreigners who are
temporarily or illegally present in the United States.
During his remarks, the president also addressed the abuse
of the immigration system, specifically pointing to wealthy foreign nationals
who travel to the United States so that their children are born in the country
and automatically obtain U.S. citizenship. Trump asserted that this practice
has turned the United States into a strategically used destination for
obtaining immigration and economic benefits.
The President warned that if the Supreme Court does not
intervene to modify the current policy, the country will face serious
consequences regarding immigration and national security. He also acknowledged
a lack of willingness within the judicial system to support his proposals,
stating that institutions sometimes “prefer to act against him.”
Birthright citizenship has been one of the most
controversial issues in the U.S. immigration debate for years. Today, millions
of citizens support restrictions on granting birthright citizenship to children
of undocumented immigrants, demanding a correct interpretation of the 14th
Amendment.
