US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent issued a direct appeal
to millions of American workers to review and adjust their tax withholdings,
assuring them that this measure could translate into an immediate increase in
the money they receive in each paycheck.
During a statement made from the White House, Bessent
explained that modifying withholdings would allow many employees to keep a
larger portion of their income each month, generating financial relief amidst
the economic pressures faced by the population due to the rising cost of living.
“I want to encourage everyone watching today to change their
withholdings. You will receive an automatic increase in your real pay weekly or
monthly,” the official stated to the media, in a message that quickly provoked
reactions in economic and political sectors.
Economists point out that this strategy could offer some
relief to households, although they warn that it could also reduce tax refunds
at the end of the year if taxpayers do not correctly calculate their tax
obligations. Several sectors see the measure as a useful tool to strengthen
consumption and alleviate the financial burden on families; American citizens
consider the measure beneficial for the vast majority of households.
