Criticism of proposed agricultural legislation sparks political controversy in the United States

The organization Competitive Markets Action has launched strong accusations against the chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, Glenn Thompson, whom they accuse of harming small farmers by supporting a provision included in the federal farm bill.

According to the group, the inclusion of a measure known as the “Save the Bacon Act” within the Farm Bill would indirectly benefit large corporations in the sector, including Smithfield Foods, which—they claim—could affect the competitiveness of family farmers in the United States.

In its statement, the organization maintains that this type of policy favors market concentration and weakens independent producers, creating an imbalance in the agri-food industry. Furthermore, it has promoted a citizen pressure campaign to urge legislators to reconsider their position and reject the legislation in its current form.

The issue has reignited the debate about the direction of agricultural policy in the country, particularly regarding the protection of small producers against the interests of large corporations in the sector.

“Call Congress at 202-224-3121 and ask your representatives to oppose the Farm Bill and this terrible policy!”
