Man Accused of Sending a Fake Ransom Message Released Under Supervised Custody

A California resident facing federal charges for allegedly sending a fraudulent ransom message related to the family of Nancy Guthrie was released Thursday after appearing in a Tucson court.

The accused, Derrick Callella, 42, had been held in federal custody during the early stages of the legal proceedings. Authorities allege he transmitted a ransom demand through channels involving interstate commerce, which triggers federal jurisdiction. He also faces an additional charge of using a telecommunications device with the intent to intimidate, threaten, or harass.

According to the prosecution, the message was allegedly sent even though no kidnapping had actually occurred, generating alarm and prompting a mobilization of resources. This type of crime, when it involves communications that cross state lines, can carry severe penalties under U.S. federal law.

Although Callella was released, the criminal proceedings continue, and he must appear in court under the conditions imposed by the court. As in all criminal cases, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a trial.
