Federal Court Temporarily Blocks California Law Restricting ICE Agents' Use of Masks

A federal judge in Los Angeles issued a preliminary injunction halting the implementation of California's so-called "No Secret Police" law, which sought to prevent federal immigration agents from wearing masks or other face coverings during operations.

The decision represents a legal victory for President Donald Trump's administration, which had challenged the state law, arguing that it interfered with the functions of federal authorities. The court determined, on a preliminary basis, that there are sufficient grounds to suspend the law's implementation while the litigation continues.

The challenged legislation specifically targeted Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, aiming to prohibit them from wearing face coverings during immigration enforcement operations. Proponents argued the measure sought to strengthen transparency and accountability in procedures. However, opponents maintained it could compromise agent safety and hinder the performance of their duties.

With the preliminary injunction, the law's implementation is paused until the case is resolved, thus maintaining, for now, the current operational practices of federal authorities in the state.
