A federal court in the United States issued a ruling
Thursday requiring the Trump administration to intervene to facilitate the
return of several Venezuelan citizens, previously transferred to a prison in El
Salvador.
The men had been sent last year under the so-called Foreign
Enemies Act, a landmark law used in national security contexts.
The ruling was issued by District Judge James Boasberg, who
determined that the government must take an active role in ensuring the return
of those affected. According to the order, authorities must cover the costs of
repatriation flights to the United States or, alternatively, allow them to
enter the country through a designated official port of entry.
The court ruling emphasizes that the application of
immigration and security law cannot impede access to due process or
indefinitely restrict these individuals' right to appear before U.S. courts.
With this decision, the court seeks to reinstate judicial review of the case
and ensure that the detainees can face any legal proceedings in accordance with
due process.
This comes in response to criticism from citizens who
consider it wrong to grant such "privileges" to those who have
violated national laws.
