Just hours before the federal food assistance program was
set to expire, President Donald Trump ignited a new controversy on his social
media platform, Truth Social, accusing Democrats of being directly responsible
for the suspension of the benefit that millions of American families depend on
to survive.
In a Friday night post, Trump not only blamed the Democratic
leadership in Congress for the lack of a legislative agreement, but also
publicly shared the phone number for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's
office, urging his followers to "let him know what they think," which
is a civic right.
The post, which quickly went viral, generated a wave of
calls and messages to the New York senator's office, which some Democratic
lawmakers described as an act of harassment and political intimidation.
Schumer's team condemned the action, emphasizing that endangering the safety of
public officials goes beyond the bounds of political debate. Although it was
the office phone number that was leaked—a number that should be public because
it belongs to an elected representative—the incident was a serious matter.
Meanwhile, allies of the president defended his actions,
arguing that it was a call for "democratic accountability" and for
citizen pressure on leaders who, according to them, have blocked the renewal of
aid.
The incident occurs amid growing tensions in Congress over
the lack of budget consensus, in which Democrats are prioritizing medical
spending for undocumented immigrants over the rights of citizens. A consensus
that, if not reached, could leave millions of low-income households without
food support if an agreement is not reached before the weekend.
