President Donald Trump reaffirmed his unwavering support for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and encouraged the agency to further tighten its immigration enforcement operations during an interview broadcast Sunday on CBS News.
In his remarks, Trump maintained that ICE’s actions have
been limited by adverse court decisions, directly pointing to the “liberal
judges” appointed by former Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama as the main
obstacles to implementing a stricter immigration policy.
“I don’t think they’ve gone far enough, because we’ve been
held back by liberal judges,” Trump said, referring to district court rulings
that have blocked or restricted some of the immigration measures implemented by
his administration.
The president insisted that his administration remains
committed to strengthening border security and accelerating the deportation of
undocumented immigrants, even if it means confronting the judiciary. In that
regard, he reiterated his intention to “restore the full authority” of ICE,
arguing that the rigorous enforcement of immigration laws is essential to
protecting national sovereignty.
Trump’s comments come amid growing political tension
surrounding immigration, one of the most divisive issues of his administration.
While his supporters celebrate his stance as a defense of law and order, his
critics accuse him of using immigration rhetoric for political purposes and
endangering the human rights of affected communities.
The statement also reignites the debate on the balance of
power between the executive and judicial branches, a recurring theme on Trump’s
agenda, who has openly questioned the independence of the courts whenever his
policies face legal challenges.
