Republican Representative Nancy Mace filed a motion of
censure against her fellow Republican, Congressman Cory Mills, on Wednesday, a
move that deepens tensions within the Republican caucus in the House of
Representatives.
According to preliminary reports, the initiative arose amid
growing discontent among several Republican lawmakers, who are reportedly upset
by alleged backroom deals that halted previous censure proceedings against
Democrats Ilhan Omar and Stacey Plaskett, in order to prevent Mills from facing
a similar measure.
The motion introduced by Mace seeks a formal House ruling on
Mills' conduct, though the full text and supporting arguments have not yet been
released. The existence of alleged agreements that reportedly halted other
censures in the recent past has also not been independently confirmed.
Mace's move adds pressure to an already tense situation in
which various Republican factions are debating transparency, internal
alliances, and the handling of disciplinary measures within the House. So far,
neither Mills nor the Republican leadership has offered public comment on the
motion or the allegations of secret agreements.
The resolution must still be reviewed by the House before a
decision is made on whether to proceed to a formal vote.
