Washington, D.C. – House Speaker Mike Johnson announced the
introduction of a new legislative package to reopen the federal government,
currently paralyzed by the lack of agreement in Congress on the budget.
Johnson explained that the proposal is “simple and
responsible,” based on the same continuing funding resolution that the House
passed in September, but with an extension of government spending through
January 30, 2026, which would allow time to advance negotiations on regular
budget appropriations.
“The package to reopen the government is simple: it’s the
same funding bill we already passed, just extended until January 30, to allow
us to continue our work in an orderly fashion and without artificial pressure,”
Johnson said at a press conference.
The announcement comes at a critical time, with thousands of
federal employees not receiving pay and several public services partially
suspended. The government shutdown, now in its second week, has generated both
political and economic pressure, with warnings that a prolonged paralysis could
affect national growth and market confidence.
Johnson defended his plan as a pragmatic solution that would
allow federal agencies to remain operational without abandoning the fundamental
budget debate. “The American people expect leadership, not gridlock. This
extension ensures stability while we continue to discuss how to spend
responsibly,” he stated.
