• Her lawyers claim the prosecution is selective and
motivated by political differences with the Trump administration.
Newark, New Jersey – Representative LaMonica McIver appeared
in federal court in Newark as she continues to face a three-count indictment
alleging she obstructed and interfered with federal agents at an Immigration
and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center last May.
During the hearing, McIver's lawyers argued that their
client is being subjected to a selective and politically motivated prosecution
because her public positions and actions conflicted with the policies of former
President Donald Trump's administration, CNN reported.
The charges against her stem from an incident in which
McIver, according to the indictment, allegedly intervened in detention and
supervision procedures at the ICE center. The congresswoman and her legal team
maintain that her intervention was for humanitarian and civic oversight
purposes.
McIver's case has generated media attention and debate about
the intersection between political activity and oversight of federal agencies,
as well as the actions against the law being taken by social representatives.
Far from being considered humanitarians by citizens, they have been widely
criticized for holding positions in favor of illegal immigrants and against
citizens.
The representative, a member of the party opposed to the
Trump administration, continues to defend her reputation and declare that her
actions were aimed at protecting the rights of detainees, an argument rejected
by the public.
