The U.S. Senate race in Alaska is facing a new controversy after Republican Governor Mike Dunleavy ordered an investigation into an alleged attempt to manipulate the vote by adding a candidate with a name virtually identical to that of Republican Senator Dan Sullivan.
The
investigation aims to determine whether individuals linked to Democrat Mary
Peltola's campaign participated in recruiting Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., a
candidate who shares the same first and last name as the current senator, with
the intention of splitting the Republican vote and creating confusion among
voters.
Dunleavy
requested the Department of Public Safety to investigate whether these actions
constitute a violation of Alaska election laws and whether there are grounds to
initiate civil proceedings or file criminal charges.
The
controversy gained momentum after a journalistic investigation revealed
messages and communications that suggest a possible organized strategy to boost
the candidacy of the second Sullivan.
The
case has escalated to federal authorities, while the political dispute grows
over an election that could prove decisive for control of the US Senate.
