President Donald Trump announced that his administration
will maintain all tariffs previously established under the national security
mechanisms outlined in Section 232, as well as the trade tariffs imposed under
Section 301, legal instruments used to address trade practices deemed unfair or
harmful to the U.S. economy.
In addition to maintaining these measures, the president
announced he will sign an Executive Order establishing a 10% global tariff
under Section 122, a provision that allows for temporary import restrictions to
protect the balance of payments or address exceptional economic circumstances.
With this decision, the White House seeks to strengthen its
trade protection strategy, maintaining existing barriers and adding a new,
broad-based tariff. The measure could have significant repercussions for international
trade by expanding the range of products subject to tariffs and sending a clear
signal about the continuation of an economic policy focused on prioritizing
U.S. industry and national security.
