The Massachusetts State Auditor’s Office of Special Investigations announced the discovery of an alleged fraud amounting to $11.9 million, following a comprehensive review of public funds allocated to various social support programs during 2025.
According to the preliminary report, some of the funds were
allegedly misappropriated from initiatives intended to serve vulnerable
populations. Among the affected programs are the Supplemental Nutrition
Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicaid, the Social Security Administration, and
other state economic and health assistance programs.
Authorities indicated that the money was allegedly diverted
through irregular practices that are currently under investigation. Although
not all the mechanisms used have been publicly detailed, the audit highlights
deficiencies in internal controls and verification systems, which would have
facilitated the misuse of public funds.
The finding has generated concern in both the political and
social spheres, as the programs involved are designed to provide support to
low-income individuals and families. State officials have indicated that
measures will be taken to strengthen oversight mechanisms, recover the funds,
and, where appropriate, pursue legal action against those responsible.
