The political persecution argument that has surfaced in
several cases linked to President Donald Trump's inner circle faced its first
significant court review on Wednesday.
In a scheduled hearing in federal court, former FBI Director
James Comey formally requested the dismissal of the charges against him,
claiming he was the target of an unfair and retaliatory prosecution.
According to his legal team, the investigations involving
him originated during the Trump administration amid a climate of political
confrontation and alleged internal pressure within the Justice Department. The
defense maintains that the authorities acted with punitive intent, driven by
tensions arising from decisions made by Comey while he headed the FBI.
The former official's lawyers argue, amid harsh public
criticism, that the case exemplifies "selective persecution," a legal
concept that denounces the use of state resources to target individuals for
political reasons rather than on sound legal grounds. Wednesday's hearing will
be crucial in determining whether the court accepts these claims or whether the
case will proceed.
So far, representatives from the Department of Justice have
not publicly commented on the defense's allegations of bias.
