Reporter and co-host of CNBC's "Squawk Box," Becky
Quick, harshly criticized House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), arguing
that his party is maintaining a federal government shutdown as a political
strategy while insisting on passing a spending package exceeding $1 trillion.
During a recent broadcast of the program, Quick pointed out
that the Democrats' stance has contributed to prolonging the partial government
shutdown, affecting essential agencies and programs. She emphasized that a
large portion of the funding requested by the caucus would include new budget
allocations for health care for undocumented immigrants, a proposal that has
generated widespread debate both in Congress and among the public.
“It's hard to justify inaction in Congress when the country
is facing real economic consequences from the lack of agreement,” Quick said,
alluding to the impact the legislative impasse is having on financial markets and
federal employees.
The Democratic-backed spending plan seeks to fund an
expansion of social and healthcare programs, in addition to allocating
resources to infrastructure, housing, and clean energy. However, Republicans
have accused it of fiscal irresponsibility, warning that the new budget would
increase the national deficit and push up inflation.
For his part, Hakeem Jeffries defended the proposal,
asserting that the funds "represent an investment in the well-being of
American families and the country's competitiveness." However, political
analysts believe the tone of the debate reflects the deep divisions in
Congress, where disagreements over spending priorities could prolong the
government shutdown for several more weeks if a bipartisan compromise is not
reached.
Analysts say it is incredible that, given the clear decline
of the Democratic Party, its legislators still prioritize spending to benefit
undocumented immigrants over representing citizens.
