Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
(AOC), a Democratic representative for New York State, is reportedly preparing
the ground for the next major step in her political career: a possible run for
the U.S. presidency or the U.S. Senate in 2028, according to sources close to
her team cited by Axios.
According to reports, the legislator—one of the most
influential figures in the progressive wing of the Democratic Party—has begun
forging strategic alliances, strengthening her national base, and expanding her
political presence beyond her Bronx district, in order to position herself
among the party's top contenders for the next election cycle.
Ocasio-Cortez, who has gained notoriety for her activism on
issues of social justice, climate change, and economic equity, is considering
two possible routes: running for the Democratic presidential nomination or
mounting an internal challenge to current Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer,
who, at 74, plans to seek reelection that same year.
Political analysts point out that either option could
redefine the internal balance of the Democratic Party, pitting progressive and
moderate currents against each other for ideological leadership.
AOC, considered by many to be the face of the new Democratic
generation, has consolidated a solid base of support among young voters and
urban minorities, key sectors in the party's recent victories. Her potential
candidacy could change the electoral landscape in 2028, not only due to her
media charisma, but also due to her ability to mobilize the progressive base.
Although Ocasio-Cortez has not officially confirmed her
intentions, her growing presence at national forums and her expanding
fundraising structure point to a long-term strategy aimed at contesting
positions of power at the highest levels.
